DAY 1: HA NOI – LANG SON – QUANG UYEN
7:30- 8:00:Your journey begins early in the morning as our friendly tour guide picks you up by minivan from your hotel in Hanoi’s Old Quarter. Sit back and enjoy a scenic 3-hour drive to Lang Son, heading toward the Chinese border and passing through beautiful northern landscapes.
Upon arrival, we visited Mac Citadel, a 16th-century fortress built by the Mac Dynasty as a strategic defense against the Le–Trinh forces. Though partially in ruins today, the citadel remains a powerful symbol of Vietnam’s turbulent feudal history. You’ll have time to explore its ancient stone walls, learn about its military significance, and take in panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
After a delicious lunch at a local restaurant in Dong Đang, the journey continues to Dong Khe, an important historical site associated with the Battle of Dong Khe (1950) during the First Indochina War. This decisive victory by the Viet Minh against French colonial forces marked a turning point in Vietnam’s struggle for independence. As you walk through the area, your guide will share fascinating stories and insights into this pivotal moment in history.
In the evening, we travel to a traditional Nùng ethnic homestay, where you’ll be warmly welcomed by a local family. Enjoy a home-cooked dinner and a peaceful overnight stay, offering a truly authentic experience of rural life and ethnic culture in northern Vietnam.
DAY 2: CAO BANG – BAN GIOC WATERFALL – BA BE NATIONAL PARK
After enjoying breakfast at the homestay, we departed for Trung Khanh, a district located right along the border with China. Along the way, you’ll have another opportunity to meet and interact with the Nùng ethnic people in Phúc Sen Village, a mountainous community renowned for its centuries-old traditional blacksmithing. The handcrafted farming tools produced here remain an essential part of daily life, a connection clearly reflected in the surrounding rice paddies and cultivated fields.
Set amid dramatic karst landscapes is the spectacular Bản Giốc Waterfall, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Southeast Asia. Stretching over 300 meters in width and shared equally between Vietnam and China, the falls create a powerful yet serene atmosphere. You’ll have time to relax, admire the scenery, and capture stunning photographs of this natural wonder.
After visiting the waterfall, we continue to Ngườm Ngao Cave, an equally impressive but contrasting natural attraction. Extending 2,144 meters underground, the cave is filled with magnificent stalactites and stalagmites, sculpted by nature over millions of years.
In the late afternoon, we return to Cao Bằng Town before descending the scenic “Snake Pass” en route to Ba Bể Lake, located within Ba Bể National Park. You’ll spend the night at a traditional Tày ethnic homestay, built in classic stilt-house style and hosted by a local Tày family. The evening is yours to unwind, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and savor a delicious, authentic home-cooked dinner.
DAY 3: BA BE LAKE – HA NOI
After breakfast, board a boat crossing Ba Be Lake to the northern shore. From here, begin a guided hike through the rainforest in the central area of Ba Be National Park, one of Vietnam’s most important protected ecosystems.
Walking along the lakeshore, you will reach a prehistoric cave believed to date back over 500 million years, hidden deep within an ancient forest of rare hardwood trees, some renowned for their exceptional strength—often compared to steel. A short distance further, a forest fire lookout station offers an excellent vantage point for bird watching and observing the rich biodiversity of the park.
Continue hiking to An Ma Temple, a sacred site of the Tày ethnic people, dedicated to the Snake God and a revered military general of the Mạc Dynasty. Surrounded by forest and water, the temple carries strong spiritual and cultural significance.
Returning to the boat, you may choose how to enjoy your time on the lake:
Relax and admire the scenery, or take a refreshing swim in the clear, cool waters. Either way, soak in the breathtaking views of limestone karst formations rising from the jungle-lined shores.
Note: Guests who prefer not to join the hike may remain on the boat to visit Widow Island or enjoy some local shopping.
Afterwards, return to Ba Bể Jungle Houses Restaurant for lunch. The journey then continues with a 230 km drive back to Hanoi, including a stop at a scenic tea plantation nestled among rolling hills. Upon arrival in Hanoi, it’s time to say goodbye—taking with you lifelong memories and meaningful connections from this unforgettable adventure.
